I found this at an antiques shop in upstate NY where I often find unusual things--and indeed, I pretty much never come across a piece like this. (Model sailing ships in cases, yes, but not 360 degree dioramas of Inuit boats (2 kayaks and a umiak) complete with carved and painted figures and rocky, moss covered outcroppings!) All wonderfully homespun feeling, very folky. I presume this was most likely made for a museum or educational context, though am not completely sure; I do believe likely 2nd quarter 20th century. Detail photos give a pretty good sense, including showing that the "roof" can be removed (with a little care) from the four corner posts to get inside this miniature world. Meant to viewed in the round, with each perspective affording new delights, including the tiny painted faces of the wooden figures.

14 1/8" x 7" x 4 7/8" t. Very good condition, sturdy and sound, sits flush on base and (removable) lid fits tight and square. The oar of the first rower in the large boat is loose due to their arms having broken off (they are sitting at their feet and could be glue repaired.) The oar is easily positioned to sit at their side, echoing the positions of the rest of the oars, as pictured. No other losses or loose bits.
